Can a Mercosur Visa Lead to Permanent Residence in Colombia
Publicado el 13 octubre 2026
A foreign national who holds an M Migrante Mercosur visa may be able to apply for a Resident visa after the required accumulated time. The important word is apply. The next visa is a separate decision, based on the rules and the evidence in force when the application is filed.
The Ministry’s current visa page lists M Migrante Mercosur among the categories for which two years of accumulated time as the principal visa holder is required before applying for a Resident visa. It also says that the time requirement does not itself guarantee approval. In addition, visa continuity matters for calculating accumulated time: a new visa granted before the previous visa expires is treated as continuous.
Review the current official requirements for the visa or migration process that matches your situation before filing. A private professional can help organize documents, but the Colombian authorities decide the application.
- How long is required before applying for a Resident visa? The current published table lists two years for M Migrante Mercosur holders.
- Will a gap break the plan? A visa granted after the previous one has expired may affect continuity. Review your dates well in advance.
